Avery Nepoose turns 13 in January 2018, lives in Maskwacis and loves taking art classes and riding horses. But she might never have had the chance to follow her passions were it not for the doctors at the Stollery Children's Hospital.
At just one week old and in –40 C weather, she was transported from the hospital in Wetaskiwin to the Stollery, 90 kilometres away in Edmonton, where she was diagnosed with a number of heart conditions. Avery was rushed into delicate open-heart surgery that lasted six hours but was ultimately successful. Since then, Avery has had very few complications. She and her mother are thankful the Stollery is right in their own backyard and gave Avery the chance to put what's in her heart on a canvas for the world to see. Read more.
