In My Backyard

About In My Backyard

Families from across Alberta tell us all the time how grateful they are to have the Stollery Children’s Hospital so close to home.

We’re proud to introduce In My Backyard, a campaign that is educating Albertans on the many ways Stollery care positively impacts your community. Over the next 12-18 months, you will meet Stollery kids from communities throughout northern Alberta who are back in their backyards because of the specialized care only the Stollery provides. Kids like Avery.

About Avery

Avery Nepoose turns 13 in January 2018, lives in Maskwacis and loves taking art classes and riding horses. But she might never have had the chance to follow her passions were it not for the doctors at the Stollery Children's Hospital. At just one week old and in –40 C weather, she was transported from the hospital in Wetaskiwin to the Stollery, 90 kilometres away in Edmonton, where she was diagnosed with a number of heart conditions. Avery was rushed into delicate open-heart surgery that lasted six hours but was ultimately successful. Since then, Avery has had very few complications. She and her mother are thankful the Stollery is right in their own backyard and gave Avery the chance to put what's in her heart on a canvas for the world to see.

The Stollery is one of the top three most specialized children’s hospitals in Canada and the only one in Western Canada with the talent and equipment to treat the most complex cases. One-third of the more than 290,000 patient visits each year are children from outside Edmonton; kids and families who know the importance of having and keeping the Stollery in their backyard.
