Meet our Stollery Champ, Kaden
On a sunny day in 2017, nine-year-old Kaden was enjoying the May long weekend at the lake. He stopped with his family to fuel up his quad before taking it out for the day, when suddenly it burst on fire and engulfed him in flames.
Miraculously, Kaden survived the fire and was airlifted to the Stollery Children’s Hospital. He spent several weeks in the pediatric intensive care unit – including 52 days in isolation. His treatment included several grafting surgeries to treat the burns that covered 70 per cent of his body from the neck down.
Due to the severity of his injuries, Kaden’s doctors expected him to be at the Stollery until early November. But Kaden was determined to get back to being a kid, pushing himself to walk as soon as he could. He walked five steps the first day he got out of isolation, 75 the next and 300 by the middle of the week. Once again, Kaden defied all odds and was discharged on September 14 – almost two months earlier than his doctors predicted. If that wasn’t enough of an accomplishment, Kaden returned to school three days after being discharged and hit the ice one month later with his hockey team.
Today, Kaden is a charming and active 11-year-old burn survivor. While people do stare at his scarred skin, he takes the attention in stride and with a sense of humour, offering to answer any questions onlookers may have and even cracking a joke now and again. Kaden receives ongoing care at the Stollery and his parents are grateful to have the world-class children’s hospital right in their backyard.
