Meet Luca

In January 2021, at the age of three, Luca went into septic shock from a strep infection and was rushed to the pediatric intensive care unit at the Stollery Children’s Hospital. They then learned he also had leukemia. Luca was intubated and had the fight of his life in the intensive care unit. While he was intubated, he sustained a brain injury and was transferred to oncology, where he spent the next two and a half years undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

Luca showed his true resiliency when he had to relearn how to walk, talk and eat. His family took his treatment one day at a time and in May 2023, he rang the bell to mark the end of his treatment and the start of living cancer free!  Luca now only comes back to the Stollery to help manage his epilepsy caused by his brain injury.

You don't realize how truly extraordinary the Stollery is until you need it. We feel so lucky to live so close to such a top-tier care facility for the people who matter most – our children.
