Pumbaa

Meet Pumbaa

Pumbaa joined the Child Life team in June 2025 thanks to our generous donors who fully fund his program and care. Pumbaa supports kids with goal-directed interventions – helping Stollery kids through different tests and procedures like IV starts, echocardiograms, bloodwork and more. He also motivates and supports during physiotherapy sessions, provides emotional support during hard moments and brings comfort during a hospital stay.

Seeing kids smile, even on hard days keeps his tail wagging – and pets all day, of course. In his spare time, Pumbaa loves exploring trails and parks where he can sniff all the smells.

His favourite snack is a banana, but he’ll never say no to a crunchy treat.

Let’s find out more about Pumbaa:

Did you have to go to school to become a Facility Dog?

Yes! I trained for two whole years at Dogs with Wings here in Edmonton before joining the Stollery team. I learned how to stay calm in busy hospital hallways, follow lots of cues and use my skills to support young patients.

What makes you the PAWfect choice for a Facility Dog?

I’m gentle, patient and I love working with kids.

What is the most unique skill that you’ve learned?

I can do a “visit” where I rest my head gently on someone’s lap or bed so kids can pet me without moving too much. I can also do a “squish” where I lay right alongside a patient in bed.

How do you rest your paws after a day of supporting Stollery kids?

I nap hard! I also go for long walks, play with my toys and get lots of cuddles at home with my primary handler, Angela, who is a Child Life Specialist.

Who’s a good boy?

Me, obviously. But I like to think all the kids I meet are the real stars.

Thanks to your support, Pumbaa can make a life-changing difference for the kids and families who rely on the Stollery’s care. You can continue to support world-class care by donating today.
