The heartbeat of the Stollery
Bedside and central monitoring systems at the Stollery Children’s Hospital help health-care providers keep one finger on the pulse at all times.
Thanks to donors like you, the Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation is granting $9 million over three years to upgrade the physiological monitoring systems across the three Stollery sites (the Stollery Children’s Hospital, the Stollery at the Royal Alexandra Hospital and the Stollery at the Sturgeon Community Hospital).
Bedside monitors are critical patient care tools that are a window into the patients’ well-being — giving doctors, nurses and other health-care providers and families their vital signs while being an anticipatory alarm to any changes to their health.
These monitoring systems are made up of bedside and central monitors, which allow the health-care team members and families to monitor kids’ vitals and alert them of any changes. The upgraded monitors will allow health-care teams to intervene much earlier and prevent illness or injury from getting worse, bringing a sense of comfort to families as they can see and alert health-care providers to any changes.
Central monitors then collect and project the data from bedside monitors onto one central monitor, so that health-care providers can keep watch of one whole unit or ward at once. The health-care team members are then able to provide these young patients with the right people, skills and equipment for urgent medical needs. They are also used as an important teaching tool for doctors, nurses and physicians since all data can be stored and reviewed to give a story of what happened.
Thanks to your support and generosity, we’re able to purchase specialized equipment such as physiological monitoring systems to help give all kids the best chance to live a long and healthy life.
