Work hard, give back and look after those who need it most

Joseph Gunning describes himself as someone who gives what he can.

That belief was shaped early, as Joseph grew up in a family of 11 and learneding generosity from his father, who immigrated from England. But it was Joseph’s own experience with the Stollery that turned gratitude into commitment.

Years ago, his daughter was struck by a vehicle and suffered a serious brain injury. Living in Peace River meant long drives to Edmonton, balancing farm work with worry and exhaustion. Through it all, one thing stayed with him.

“The care was the best I could ever imagine,” Joseph recalls. “It made me rest easier, knowing she was in good hands.” Years later, when his great-grandson faced complications at birth, the Stollery was there again — reinforcing a connection that now spans generations.

Joseph has supported the Stollery since 2009, increasing his monthly gifts over time. Recently, he decided to include the Foundation in his will, becoming a member of the Great Bear Society.

Now 80, Joseph still rises early to tend his farm in Peace River. He lives modestly, guided by steady values: work hard, give back and look after those who need it most.

Through his generosity — today and beyond — Joseph is helping make sure they do.

“Kids don’t ask to be sick. They deserve all the support we can give them."
– Joseph Gunning, Bear Hug Club and Great Bear Society member
