Meet Jason

Jason’s job involves both caring for patients who are admitted to the Hospital as well as seeing patients in the outpatient clinic. He performs endoscopy, looks after children requiring long-term intravenous nutrition support and provides gastrointestinal (GI) care within the cystic fibrosis clinic.

Outside of work, Jason loves to travel, including to nearby mountain destinations with his family. He also enjoys running in Edmonton’s River Valley and ravine trails. He’s a pretty big bookworm, too – make sure to ask him for his recommendations!

Let’s find out more about Jason:

What do you like most about your job?

Honestly, the people. I am fortunate to work with a huge number of smart, caring, compassionate, collaborative and genuinely fun people who are focused on the same goal of providing the best care to the kids we look after. Our GI division is an especially supportive group, and we make it a priority to look after each other and step in to help whenever needed. Having the support of a great division makes even those hard days much easier.

How long have you worked at the Stollery?

Nine years.

Do you have a personal connection to the Stollery?

Both of my boys have received care at the Stollery when they were younger. Although I felt comfortable knowing the providers involved in their care, what I remember is how they made sure my kids felt comfortable, safe and involved in their own care.

Have donor funds directly impacted the area you work in?

The Stollery Children’s Hospital Foundation has helped provide direct support for the purchase of dedicated ultrasound equipment which has been a fantastic advance in the care we provide to children with inflammatory bowel disease. We were also able to pilot the role of a nurse practitioner to support our intestinal rehabilitation program which has helped us provide consistent and organized care to this complex and growing group of children.

What is your favourite kids’ book?

The Bad Guys series is hugely popular in my house right now with just the right dose of action and silliness. When my kids were younger, they really enjoyed I Want My Hat Back by Jon Klassen.

Do you have a favourite superhero?

I am a bit of a low-key Marvel fan generally, but in particular, I’ve always liked Spiderman. One of the things I like about him is that, while he has his superpowers, fights crime and protects others, he doesn’t take himself too seriously.

I am fortunate to work with a huge number of smart, caring, compassionate, collaborative and genuinely fun people who are focused on the same goal of providing the best care to the kids we look after.
